Attracting Birds
Use These Tips To Make Any Yard More Bird-Friendly

1. Food
Plentiful Food Sources Will Keep Birds Content
Provide Berries or Seed Year Round
Plants fruit at different times of year so grow a mix of plants to extend the berry season.
Offer Variety
Not all wild birds enjoy bird feeders, though many do.  If you can provide a mix of suet, fruit and seed feeders you'll attract the biggest, and most diverse, crowd.
Discourage Four-Legged Visitors
Keep squirrels at bay with baffles or by wrapping posts in aluminum flashing.  Place feeders away from large plants so predators, such as cats, can't lurk too close.
2. Water
Visiting Birds Are More Likely To Stay If There's An Easy Source Of Water
Don't Let The Water Run Dry
Water is often harder for birds to find than food.  Keep birdbaths or ponds filled all year.  A heated birdbath is a great gift for the birdwatcher on your list!
Keep The Birdbath Clean
Rinse and refill it often to prevent disease and mosquitos.
Furnish Firm Footing
Choose a birdbath with a rough or textured surface or add small stones to the bottom so birds don't slip.  It's safer for them and they'll be much more likely to use the birdbath.
Place Ponds Carefully
Build a bird-friendly pond on level ground to avoid chemical runoff.  And be sure to make some areas 2 inches deep or less so small birds don't drown.
3. Shelter
Birds need safe, secure homes, too, whether for nest building or just taking a break from the cold.
Plant Evergreens For Nesting
Spruce, cedar, and pine are great for nesting cardinals, sparrows and other birds.
Block Winter Winds With Tall Trees
A sheltered place in your yard gives birds a little relief from winter winds and storms, helping them survive the coldest months.
Vary Height of Trees, Shrubs And Other Plants.
You'll fill the needs of different birds who prefer to nest and feed in treetops, shrubs, or on the ground.
Provide A Safe Place To Preen
It's hard to fly with wet feathers.  Grow shrubs or provide a perch within 10 feet of ponds or birdbathsfor safe places to dry off a bit before flying away.
